Special CNY treat ease household burden of PPR residents

KUALA LUMPUR, 14th January 2017: In conjunction with the upcoming Lunar New Year, ten underprivileged families from PPR Kampung Muhibbah, Puchong have been assessed and selected to join the Shopping Buddy program recently, a charity program initiated by the Great Vision Charity Association (GVCA).

Accompanied by volunteers from GVCA, each needy family was given RM100 angpao for a shopping treat at Tesco Scott Garden. The ten families consist of 6 Chinese families, 2 Malay families and 2 Indian families.

Some participants ecstatically got themselves daily necessity goods such as rice, flour, oil while the Chinese families prepared purchased the goods needed to celebrate Chinese New Year.

GVCA representative, Ms Chor Mun Yan commented “We visited the houses of these needy families to understand the plight they are facing.”

“One of the families that we assessed suffered from mental illness and having difficulty in living a normal life. The 54 years old breadwinner of the family earns a living of RM700 per month to support himself and his family who consist of his elderly mother and 3 other siblings who are suffering from down syndrome.” said Ms Chor.

“Among the participants, there are two elderly work as a cleaner with an average monthly income of RM550, it is clearly not enough to support their living.” she added.

“We want to let them have joy preparing for the festive without worrying to get extras fund to spend for the festive.” said Ms Chor Mun Yan, representative of GVCA.

After the shopping session, the participants were invited for a lunch together before being chauffeured back to their homes. Everyone left home with smiles.

One student volunteer Leong Pui Ling who helped during the event commented “Rakan Shopping has given me the opportunity to connect with the underprivileged and I was able to witness how they managed their funds deligently.”
