SERDANG, 13 August 2016 – Fourteen teenagers from Rumah Amal Limpahan Kasih got to experience a day’s life in university via an educational trip organised by Great Vision Charity Association to the University Putra Malaysia (UPM) in Serdang, which has been recently voted as Asia’s Best Green Campus by Universitas Indonesia (UI) Greenmetric Ranking of World Universities 2015.

The journey heading to UPM began with some bonding between the association’s representative and volunteers and the teenagers from the children’s home. The group was greeted by a student volunteer, Mr Chew Han Hoong, who gave an introduction about the university and acted as tour guide to show the group around the campus. The teens were happily admiring greenery throughout the visit at the largest university campus in Malaysia. According to Chew, there were various fruit trees that are grown all over the campus ground that includes durians, rambutans, and mangoes.

The excitement grew further when the group paid a visit to the Equine Farm. A guide from the Equire Farm provided the teens with some informative fun facts on horses, and everyone were given opportunity to feed the horses with carrots, while having ample fun time taking photographs with the horses. The group then paid a visit to the Animal Anatomy Museum, where the group learnt about animal preservation techniques used by museums. The teens were especially excited during the Horse Anatomy briefing session that utilises a state-of-the-art interactive touch-screen projector to peel off various layers of the animal’s organs and tissues in order to have a better insight on its anatomy.

The fun-filled day is followed by an educational talk by Chew in a lecture theatre environment, which is a first-time experience for the teens. Chew enlightened the teens on various possible pathways and choices after their SPM. It was an eye opening moment for them to be exposed on the various courses available at UPM and being motivated to develop their knowledge to achieve their goals. A couple of them shared on their ambitions and dreams too.

After touring the huge campus compound by bus and visiting the various facilities available, the volunteers and teens break for lunch together. The volunteers accompanied and befriended the teens throughout the journey. The educational trip ended with joy and they were sent home with all smiles and gained useful insights, each having their dreams of studying in an university reinforced.
